Early Diabetic Kidney Disease (small amounts of protein leaking, kidney function still largely preserved) can often be substantially improved, sometimes even reversed, with tight blood sugar control, blood pressure management and the right medicines.
Once significant scarring has occurred in the kidney, that specific damage usually can’t be undone — but progression can still be slowed dramatically, and sometimes halted, with proper treatment. Newer medicines like SGLT2 inhibitors and blood-pressure medicines such as Telmisartan have been shown to meaningfully protect kidney function even at this stage.
The real goal of treatment is to stop early kidney disease from ever becoming late-stage disease that needs dialysis. This is not a hopeless diagnosis — especially when caught early and managed consistently.
