Glutathione is a tripeptide composed of cysteine, glycine, and glutamic acid. It is an antioxidant and has a function in regulating the immune system. Suboptimal or deficient glutathione levels have been associated with various chronic and age-related conditions, including neurodegenerative diseases, mitochondrial dysfunction, and certain types of cancer.

 Skin Benefits of Glutathione
Based on its mechanism of action and small scientific studies, glutathione may offer several skin-related benefits. These include

Brightens Complexion : by reducing the melanin in skin

Reduces Signs of Ageing : By neutralising free radicals, glutathione helps minimise fine lines and wrinkles and supports collagen synthesis, improving skin firmness and elasticity

Anti-inflammatory Effects : It helps soothe inflammatory skin conditions such as acne and eczema.

However, most of these benefits in the literature are based on tiny groups of patients in smaller studies. Since these studies have been undertaken over short durations, we cannot be certain whether the benefits are sustained. Furthermore, there are some scientific studies that show no benefits. There is also evidence of harm associated with the use of intravenous glutathione for skin lightening; therefore, it should be entirely avoided.

Research involving a larger number of people studied over a longer duration will help clarify whether glutathione is of any benefit.
